It has been proved that depression is common in diabetes mellitus. Primary care
physician commonly met depression in diabetic patient. The purpose of this study is to
know which factors are connected to depression.
One hundred patients were selected in Konkuk University Medical Center, Chungju
Hospital from May 1st 1997 to May 30th. Patients were admitted or outpatient cared in
the Department of Family Medicine and Internal Medicine. The results came from the
analysis on their answers by BDI(Beck¡¯s Depression Inventory).
Prevalence of depression was 25% by based on the cut off point(male 23 point, female
24 point in BDI). Blood glucose control(p<0.05), HbA1c(p<0.05), exercise state(p<0.05)
and diabetic complication(p<0.05) were significantly related to depression. But the age
and diet control were not related.
Diabetic complications including depression could be minimized by strict control of
blood sugar and continuing education about diabetes mellitus. Therefore the primary care
physician should provide continuing and comprehensive care to diabetic patient.
